HRTC (Hunter River Tree Care) is the newest division of HRT (Hunter River Trees) – a name trusted across the Hunter Valley for professionalism, integrity, and quality Tree care.
Originally launched in 2014 under the name ArborCert, our consulting arm has now fully integrated into the HRT family, rebranded as HRTC Consulting, Reporting and Tree Health Management. This evolution reflects both our growth and our continued focus on excellence in tree health assessments, diagnostic reporting, and advisory services.
Our roots in consulting began with the same mission that drives all of HRT: Steve being practical and a certified arborist to protect, understand, and enhance the life of trees using science-backed methods and practical experience. Now under the HRTC umbrella, we continue to deliver evidence-based, tailored solutions that help property owners, councils, and developers make informed decisions about tree care.
Whether it’s pre-development assessments, tree risk evaluations, or long-term management plans, HRTC brings clarity, credibility, and care to every project.

Founded by Stephen (Steve) and Claudia Watson, HRT began as a small, passionate operation nestled in the heart of the Hunter Valley. Steve, raised in the bush and inspired by his father’s deep connection to nature, developed a strong affinity for arboriculture early on. He became one of the first three certified arborists in the region, starting his journey as a climber. After gaining experience and honing his skills, Steve launched his own business and quickly established himself as a sought-after contract climber.
In 2014, we expanded our services to include tree health consulting as ArborCert— motivated by a commitment to preserving and nurturing trees through scientifically proven methods. Our team continues to undergo regular training to stay at the forefront of industry standards and innovations.
In 2024, Steve and Will attended the Society of Arboriculture Conference in the USA, where they connected with global leaders and explored cutting-edge techniques. As a result of this trip and exposure to current best practices from the U.S., we are now launching a dedicated Tree Health Management (THM) Division—bringing world—class arboriculture care to Australia.
We are proud to share that we recently completed a USA trip in October 2025, where we visited The Bartlett Tree Company, the University of Tennessee, the University of Kentucky, and Ashmore Coolmore Stud in Kentucky. Following this, we attended the ISA Conference in New Zealand to expand our knowledge and industry connections further.

Every tree is unique, so our arborists develop customised maintenance plans. Depending on the species, age, location and condition of your tree, our comprehensive services can range from health monitoring to structural care. Our arborists support young or damaged trees with staking and guying, and we care for trees in all environments, backyards and commercial properties. Planting new trees and maintaining existing ones is key to landscape and environmental sustainability.
We stay true to traditional values like honesty, reliability, and personal care—while using the latest arboriculture technology to deliver the best outcomes.
Our team includes AQF Level 5 and Level 3 certified professionals, ensuring your trees are in expert hands.
We go beyond the job brief. Every tree is assessed holistically, and we recommend what it truly needs to thrive.
No two properties or trees are the same. We customise every solution to match your goals and the unique needs of your site.
As one of the early adopters of this precision tool in Australia, we offer non-invasive root investigations and soil aeration with minimal disturbance.
Known across NSW for our integrity, professionalism, and high-quality results—we’re proud of the strong relationships we’ve built with clients over decades.
From recycling green waste into mulch and compost, to developing tree medications, we’re leading the way with our Tree Health Management System (THMS) and Botanical Care Programs— designed to elevate tree care standards in Australia.
